Sniper Training

About

This was a project for the Virtual Worlds class, back in early 2015, during my master's in Computer Science. My group and I developed a Sniper Training immersive environment by combining different devices and technologies. The experience included a plastic gun, Oculus Rift DK2, 3RD Space Vest to imitate the recoil of the gun and bullets taken, and 3D Sound using noise cancelling headphones.

Plastic Gun and a Sprinkler

The physical fire trigger of the plastic gun was connected to an Arduino, and a smartphone was placed on top to track (through its sensors and OSC communication--same could be achieved with IMU sensors connected to Arduino) and map the physical movements of the gun in the virtual environment (6DOF).

Scope View

Finally, despite being a bit hacky, it was also possible to enter the zoomed in (scope view) view using the Oculus tracking camera (based on its proximity). A more robust alternative would be to use IR LEDs instead.
